National Institute of Technology, Silchar is an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act. It was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar. It was as a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Assam under the administration of a society registered under society registration Act XXI of 1860. The college was transformed into National Institute of Technology in the year 2002 and bestowed with the status of Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. A number of Post-Graduate courses have been approved by the AICTE and are expected to start shortly. It is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 600 acres (2.43 km2) of land on the outskirts of Silchar along the banks of river Barak. The Institute has provided space to Indian Meteorology Department and Indian Geomagnetic Observatory to set up their laboratories within the campus.
