About Tezpur University (TEZU)

Tezpur University was established by an Act of Parliament (Act. No. 45, 1993) in 1994. The objects of this Central University as envisaged in the statutes, are that it shall: strive to offer employment oriented and interdisciplinary course, mostly at postgraduate level, to meet the local and regional aspirations and the development of the state of Assam; offer courses and promote research in areas which are of special and direct relevance to the region and in the emerging areas in Science and Technology; promote national integration and study of the rich cultural heritage of the region and in particular, the diverse ethnic, linguistic and cultural heritage of the state; utilize distance education technique and modern communication technologies to provide Access to higher education for large segment of the population, and in particular the disadvantaged group such as those living in remote and rural areas; to upgrade the professional knowledge and skill of in-service personnel, in particular schoolteachers, medical personnel and extension staff, and to provide opportunities for lifelong learning for adults; and provide an innovative system of university level education flexible in regard to methods and pace of learning and encourage excellence in new fields of knowledge.

The medium of instruction/examination in the University at all level is English. Each academic programme is designed to offer enough flexibility in the choice of courses for the candidates. Besides the compulsory (core) courses for each of the programmes, the candidates also have the option to choose courses of their own interest from the elective /optional courses. The university strictly adheres to a well planned academic calendar specifying the schedule of academic activities. The detailed academic calendar is made available in the University Website as well as in the departments in due time. There is adequate provision for laboratory works, seminars, tutorials, case studies, guided field work, etc., wherever appropriate, to inculcate the spirit of independent thinking and enrich the handsome experience.
